Combat damage in Sector Space is reduced by Soak and then Resistance: Effective Damage = (Incoming Damage - Soak) * (1 - Resistance %). Damage splits between Physical (PH) and Electro-Magnetic (EM); shields soak EM-first and armor is bypassed by crits from Lasers. Boss/Elite kills grant tiered loot crates alongside the standard scrap, damaged, or destroyed drops.

More context

Six persistent weapon categories set the offensive slot color systems: Plasma Cannons, Missiles, Lasers, Disruptors, and Gauss/Rail Guns each have their own crit effect, range, and resource cost. Faction hostility is per faction and resets only on player death.

Read the damage formula

Effective Damage
(Incoming Damage - Soak) * (1 - Resistance %)
Soak
Additive per point of gear
Resistance
Multiplicative with diminishing returns; ~70% endgame, 80% hard, 90%+ nearly impossible
Damage split
Physical (PH) and Electro-Magnetic (EM)
Shield soak
EM-first
Armor crit bypass
Lasers at 10% chance

Pick a weapon category

Plasma Cannons

Balanced PH/EM, shortest range; crit stops Armor Regen for 4 seconds at 10% chance.

Best for: Short-range general use

Missiles

Lowest energy cost, longest range, slowest ROF; crit stops Shield Regen for 4 seconds at 5%, and higher tiers fire volleys consuming multiple missiles unless the Infiltrator class or Missile Specialization skill softens this.

Best for: Long-range shield breaks

Lasers

Extreme EM, second-fastest ROF tied with Disruptors and Gauss; crit bypasses shields at 10%.

Best for: EM-heavy shielded targets

Disruptors

Heavy EM, high ROF, second-worst range; crit reduces target ROF by 50% for 4 seconds at 10%.

Best for: Slowing fast opponents

Gauss/Rail Guns

Heavy PH, high ROF, mid range; crit slows target by 50% for 4 seconds at 10%; consume ammo.

Best for: PH damage and ammo-driven fights

Utility effects and consumables

A Grappler tether slows the target's movement to keep it in optimal weapon range, and a Resistance Webber cuts the target's damage resistance so incoming DPS rises sharply.

Power Cells, Hull Repair Kits, Armor Kits, and Shield Boosters are consumables that grant temporary boosts; if their contribution would overflow the stat's cap, no resource is consumed.

Understand faction hostility

The 16 persistent encounter slots running galaxy-wide are split 2 Police / 3 Invaders / 3 Merchants / 3 Void Fleets / 2 Swarms / 3 Void Horrors, and roll against the player's neighborhood region. Spawn location determines the fleet's faction and hostility. Hostile-type encounters (Invaders, Void Fleets, Swarms, Void Horrors) never spawn in sectors owned by the player or the Galactic Alliance, or in any Protected region.

Spawned fleets linger 40-120 seconds before flying off and despawning; ships beyond 10000 units are cleaned up automatically. About 1 in 10 ships in any spawned fleet becomes an Elite.

Hostility is split into six colors: Allied Lime, Friendly Aqua, Neutral Yellow, Aggressive Tangerine and Coral mix, Hostile Coral Red, Passive Light Purple. Aggressive ships attack any target within 4 levels (either side) of their own level, while Hostile ships attack anything not flagged as Hostile. Hostility memory is per faction rather than per ship: attacking one Space Pirate makes every pirate ship in the galaxy hostile until the player dies and respawns (faction-wide grudges reset on player death). Police/Alliance and factions at exactly Neutral hostility never mark each other as enemies.

Default faction setups: Player Allied; Galactic Alliance Friendly; Lost Empire, Alien Hive Mind, Insurrection, Separatist Dominion, Outer Rim Militia, Star Revolutionaries, Void Creatures, and Rogue Drones Aggressive; Celestial Shards, Deep Space Alliance, Starborn Syndicate, Colonial Republic, United Federation, Roaming Traders, Free Capitalists, Space Truckers, and Trade Coalition Neutral; Pirate Guild, Smugglers Cartel, Rogue Convoy, Space Pirates, The Ancients, The Brood, and Void Horrors Hostile. Hostile factions become more common the further the player travels from Origin.

Find Boss and Elite spawns

Boss and Elite are the same underlying game state. Both are given a non-playable class with profession IDs 5 (Damage Boss: +1% per level to Energy, Weapon Damage, and Critical Damage) or 6 (Tanky Boss: +1% per level to Shield, Armor, and Hull). A ship becomes an Elite or Boss in three ways:

  1. A guaranteed slot in Dungeon sectors (1-4 per dungeon, drawn from a fixed pool per sector tier).
  2. A fixed scripted or corner boss spawn placed during world generation.
  3. Roughly a 1-in-10 chance per ship in a random Encounter fleet.

Visually each Boss/Elite is given a random cosmetic hull dye on creation, which triggers the horned-skull icon above the nameplate; the skull-and-crossbones icon is reserved for Pirate-type hulls. Both icons only appear on Aggressive or Hostile ships.

Plan around the loot drops

Loot on death always drops one Scrap or Salvage item. The destroyed ship's equipped gear has roughly 1-in-10 per slot up to half its slots dropping, each piece of gear always at damaged or destroyed quality (50/50). Cargo drops follow the standard death rules, and a small chance yields a cosmetic hull dye tied to that hull type.

Boss/Elite kills (other than scripted uniques) also grant one extra tiered loot crate (1-2 items). Scripted uniques always drop a unique named item plus, if also a Boss/Elite, an extra tiered crate (2-3 items) and additional gear drops scaling as enemy level / 10.

Standalone rare drops roll flat 1-in-750 alongside a minimum sector tier threshold: Message in a Canister (T3+), Blob Gallstone (T3+), Void Pearl (T4+ rolls twice independently), Faulty Warp Coil (T5+, paired with Miranda Recording), Atlas Orb (T6+).
